As with all other aspects of their society, the
creatures bred by the Yuuzhan Vong are a testament to pain and death. The
Yuuzhan Vong have perfected genetic engineering. as is visible in the many
creatures created to do their bidding. From the diminutive ngdin to the
colossal yammosk, these creatures have all been created for the purpose of
conquest. While some serve a more practical purpose than others do, they
all play an important role in the overall plans of the Yuuzhan Vong.
Contamination Vacuum: This Ewok-sized quadruped is used to remove
an area of harmful substances. In one incident that was
observed, the creature was utilized to remove the corpses of victims of
bo’tous spores with its long vacuum-like snout. It is not known
what processes occur within this creature to allow it to contain these
contaminants without harm.
Calcificator: Also known as creepers, these small, gray
creatures sport six legs used for walking and four other appendages for other
use. Two of those appendages are used for grasping; the other two consist
of tiny pincers for cutting and feathery fronds used to induce pain. The
carapace of the creepers are covered with tiny white bumps of yorik coral seeds
that look like gravel. The creepers see through a centralized stalk made
up of three central eyes. The main task of the creepers is to inject the
coral seeds into the flesh of the slaves of the Yuuzhan Vong. These seeds
will grow in the bodies of the slaves, thriving on the vital fluids and energy
of their hosts. Because of this, the yorik coral keeps the slave from
revolting.
Dweebits: Dweebit is the common name for several variations of
small, reddish-brown beetles developed by the Yuuzhan Vong. Dweebit
beetles are used to alter the environment of a planet to serve the needs of the
Vong. They have been used to make the environment uninhabitable for native
life, altering it to suitable grounds for manufacturing other organic
technologies. The dweebits themselves live in small groups in the root
systems of plants and release chemicals into the soil. The plants, in
turn, absorb these chemicals and release them into the atmosphere through
photosynthesis. As is the case with most insects, dweebits produce rapidly and
in large numbers, spreading quickly through a planet's ecosystem.
Fenceworms: Raining down from the heavens in tent-like pods,
fenceworms are a living containment device often deployed to battlezones. When
grouped together, the cylindrical, bristled worms form a living perimeter around
the target and move inward just slow enough to cause fear in the huddled masses.
The segmented creatures are difficult to distinguish as living creatures,
with only their bioluminescent eyespots and antennae giving their facade away.
Fenceworms scuttle forward on a hundred pairs of legs. They are
equipped with organic suction cups that are also used to prevent prisoners from
escaping.
Flutters: Curious creatures at first glance, flutters actually
serve a remarkably simple purpose. Flutters are the Yuuzhan Vong equivalent of a
sculpture or furniture drape. They resemble squares of patterned cloth and
are often used to hide the idols of the Yuuzhan Vong gods.
Gragricha: Reminiscent of simple garden snails, gragricha are
anything but simple. These creatures can grow to enormous proportions, the
largest able to house an entire flight of X-wing starfighters. The gragricha are
used to produce the living structures of the Yuuzhan Vong. By devouring
rock and almost any other substance, the giant snails excrete a rocky material
that is used in the construction process.
Gricha: Gricha are small creatures used by the Yuuzhan Vong as
repair workers. They are commonly kept around to repair the shell-like
grashal and minishal buildings. The larvae scuttle around, eating material
from the ground and excreting it as shell material to patch over breeches.
Grutchin: The creatures known as grutchins are not rational or
trained as the Yuuzhan Vong's other creatures are; they cannot be controlled or
recalled once released. Extremely aggressive, grutchins are half-meter
long, black, winged insects that somewhat resemble armored turfhoppers. They are
bred easily and mature quickly. Extending from their upper bodies are a
pair of grasping legs and acid-secreting pincers. These beasts are
released from special carrying pods found on modified Vong transport ships.
A swarm of grutchins can easily destroy a squadron of starfighters. When
finished destroying their enemies they must be exterminated, as a mature
grutchin will attack anything in its path. They can't reproduce because they
have no queens -- a safety measure in case a grutchin was to escape.
Implanter: A cousin species to the calcificator, the implanter
serves a very similar function. Instead of implanting slaves with yorik
coral seeds pulled from its carapace, the implanter uses its four appendages to
introduce enhancements to its patient. The implanter is often used in
ascension ceremonies where Yuuzhan Vong are promoted to a higher rank. These
ceremonies include the addition of biological enhancements to the body. The
most common of these are small barbed hooks at the shoulders to drape a cloak of
command, or small hooked claws at the wrists and ankles for use in combat.
Implanters also employ a resinous exudate to weld the enhancements to the
bone and seal the wounds.
Naotebe Wingling: Naotebe winglings were engineered by master
shapers to dissolve and eat synthplast and other plastic derivatives. They
are fairly large, with white patterns on their wings that resemble eyes. The
creatures have two distinct stages: one of a worm and one of a moth.
During both stages they can eat synthplast, and after only two weeks of
maturation do they metamorphose into the mature moth stage. They can cause
mild damage with their sharp teeth, and can be killed by harsh atmospheres.
Ngdin: These creatures are used by the Yuuzhan Vong as a cleanup
device. The ngdins remove blood and other tissue from areas where warriors
or other creatures have been injured or killed. They are quite plump due to the
amounts of blood they absorb. It is a custom of the Yuuzhan Vong to devour
a ngdin when it reaches a certain plumpness. The cilia with which they
move can deliver a numbing sting to those it touches, making it an effective
painkiller.
Provoker Spineray: This Yuuzhan Vong creature is bio-engineered for
use in stimulating the nervous system of another alien creature. These
creatures are developed specially for the species on which they are to be used
on. They can be manipulated to cause pain to selective nerve arrays. With
the use of a provoker spineray, a Yuuzhan Vong shaper can map out a being's
nervous system, discovering what each set of nerves is designed to do along the
way. The use of a provoker spineray is controlled by the Protocol of Tsong,
and requires that the shaper use an ol-villip to monitor its actions.
Qahsa: This huge creature is used by the Yuuzhan Vong to serve as a
worldship's computer memory bank.
Shlecho Newt: Brought to this galaxy by the Yuuzhan Vong, shlecho
newts have a particular liking for coomb spores. Normally a brownish-green
coloration, they turn a bright crimson color when they detect the deadly spores.
Tu-Scart & Sgauru: Tu-Scart and Sgauru are a symbiotic pair of
organisms created by the Yuuzhan Vong. Their sole purpose is destruction.
Tu-Scart is a gigantic snake-like creature who can wrap himself around a
building and feed from a wedge-shaped head. The smaller Sgauru, on the
other hand, depends on Tu-Scart for existence. She is attached to the
greater being by clinging to it with powerful rear pincers. Her segmented
body rears up to throw her large head against a target, turning it into rubble.
Sgauru then uses her dozens of tentacles to scoop duracrete and
transparisteel into her maw. This combination of two destroyers is usually
enough to deter others from fighting back -- nothing is quite as horrendous as
Yuuzhan Vong creations like these.
Yammosk: A yammosk is a large, brain-like creature with several
tentacles and a single-toothed, beaked maw. Known as war coordinators,
yammosks have incredible psychic abilities. They can project auras of
fear, hopelessness, ecstasy, and pride. The massive psionic emanations
from the yammosk are strong enough to disrupt shields and drive even the
strongest-willed Jedi insane. Yammosks have one major advantage in combat: any
Yuuzhan Vong within the yammosk's area of psychic projection are immediately
linked to it and it coordinates their attacks and movements with an incredible
tactical skill. Additionally, Yuuzhan Vong pilots, warriors, spacecraft,
and vehicles gain bonuses to all abilities which involve coordination with other
Vong, such as combining fire or starship maneuvers. If the yammosk is
killed or taken out of action, all Yuuzhan Vong and support craft suffer from
the shock of lost contact for several moments.
Ychna:
One of the Yuuzhan Vong’s most horrific creations,
the ychna is a gargantuan space-faring serpent with a voracious appetite. Upon
its release, it coils itself around the nearest enemy target, whether it be a
capital ship or orbital city, and will begin feeding itself on the construct and
inhabitants of the target. The slug-like creature has a wedge shaped head
and a mouth easily eighty meters wide. The ychna’s gullet
is large enough for an entire squadron of X-wings to fly through. The
fleshy pouch covering its dorsal blowhole serves as life support in the cold
depths of space.
